How We Work
Safety on our projects
We plan for safety before mobilization and review it as the work progresses. The superintendent works with the trades to identify hazards, coordinate the upcoming work and make sure the people on site understand the plan.
Before work starts
The safety plan is specific to the project
- 01
Site-specific safety plan
We review the building and the work planned for each phase, then document the hazards, the precautions required and how the work will be separated from the public.
- 02
Emergency action plan
The emergency plan is posted before work starts. It identifies the person in charge, the site address and emergency contacts, first-aid arrangements and the nearest clinic and hospital. It also sets out evacuation routes, where to gather and how everyone will be accounted for.
- 03
Trade partner submittals
Before starting work, each trade provides their IIPP, a hazard analysis for high-risk scope, safety data sheets and the required training records.
Health precautions
Heat, dust and hazardous materials
We plan for indoor and outdoor heat as conditions require, including drinking water, shade or cool-down areas, rest breaks and time for workers to adjust to the heat. The team reviews the precautions and how to respond if someone shows signs of heat illness.
Before work disturbs existing materials, we review the available surveys and arrange any additional assessment needed for hazards such as asbestos and lead. We coordinate dust controls with the trades, including silica exposure controls for work such as cutting or grinding concrete.
Site orientation
Each worker is oriented before starting work
The superintendent takes each new worker through the hazards specific to the project, the emergency procedures and where to gather. The orientation also covers the site requirements for protective equipment, traffic and equipment, work at height, hot work and housekeeping.
Instructions are given in a language and form workers understand, including how to raise a safety concern without fear of reprisal. The superintendent maintains an overall sign-in record.
Every week
Safety is reviewed with the work ahead
- 01
Site stand down
The full team stops once a week to discuss a safety topic and review the upcoming work. Trade foremen take part so their crews understand the precautions required for the activities ahead.
- 02
Site safety audit
The superintendent walks the site using a written audit, checking that high-risk work is pre-planned and hazards are addressed. A life safety hazard stops the affected work until it is controlled, and corrective actions are documented.
As the work or site conditions change, we review the hazards with the affected trades before the next activity starts. Task-specific inspections are carried out at the frequency the work requires.
Trade partners
Safety is part of selecting and managing the trades
We review a trade’s safety record as part of selecting the team for a project. Each trade identifies the competent persons required for its scope, and its foremen coordinate with the superintendent on hazards that could affect other crews.
Working with us as a trade partnerOccupied buildings
The work is separated from the people using the building
When a building remains occupied during construction, we plan how tenants, guests and the public will move around the work. Barricades and protected routes separate construction from the occupied areas. Deliveries and noisy work are coordinated with building management, and occupants and neighbors have a contact for questions or concerns.
Reporting
Same-day reporting to our team
Incidents are reported to our team immediately by phone and documented internally the same day. Near misses are reported the same way so the team can review what happened and address the hazard. Required notifications to Cal/OSHA are handled separately within the applicable deadlines.
Our founder administers the company’s written Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The Code of Safe Practices sets out the requirements for safe work and is available on site.
